Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition characterized by a gradual loss of kidney function over time.

What causes CKD?

The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases. Diabetes happens when your blood sugar is too high, causing damage to many organs in your body, including the kidneys and heart, as well as blood vessels, nerves and eyes.

What are the signs of CKD where your kidneys are not working properly?

Signs and symptoms of acute kidney failure may include decreased urine output, although occasionally urine output remains normal. Fluid retention, causing swelling in your legs, ankles or feet. Shortness of breath.

Simple way to Check CKD

One of the best ways to test for CKD and assess kidney damage is a simple urine test which detects the presence of albumin.

How CKD is Measured?

CKD is measured basically by calculating the creatinine level in blood. Creatinine levels vary depending on the age. If the average creatinine level is higher than 1.2 in women and 1.4 in men it is sign of kidneys are not working properly. When the kidney disease progresses the carnitine level rises.

The GFR ( Glomerular Filtration Rate ) test uses to measure how well the kidneys are removing waste & excesses from the blood. It is a mathematical calculation. Based on this calculation CKD is divided into 5 stages:

Stages of CKD

  • Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min)
  • Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min)
  • Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 45-59 mL/min)
  • Stage 3B Moderate CKD (GFR = 30-44 mL/min
  • Stage 4 Severe CKD (GFR = 15-29 mL/min)
  • Stage 5 End Stage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min)

Can CKD be cured?

There’s no cure for chronic kidney disease (CKD), but treatment can help relieve the symptoms and stop it getting worse. Your treatment will depend on the stage of your CKD.

Can kidneys recover from CKD?

The damage already happened to the kidney cannot be repaired. But that does not necessarily mean it get worse.  Some people live long without much undue affect.

But it is not advisable to take it granted.

How long can you live with chronic kidney disease?

The determining factors for how long you can live with CKD are your age, and other health problems you have. Most people with early CKD will never have kidney failure. But some will reach kidney failure and may have to live with dialysis or kidney transplants.
